Injection Molding Cost for Small Batch: What to Expect and How to Budget

Introduction

Not every injection molding project needs 100,000 parts. Many OEMs, startups, and product developers need small batch production — 500 to 10,000 units — for market testing, niche products, or initial launch inventory.

The challenge: injection molding is built for volume. The mold cost is the same whether you produce 500 parts or 500,000. That fixed upfront investment makes small batch injection molding cost-sensitive, and without the right approach, your per-unit cost can be surprisingly high.

We run small batch production on our own injection machines every month. Here is how we approach cost for low-volume projects.

Why Small Batch Injection Molding Costs More Per Unit

The Mold Cost Problem

The injection mold (tooling) is a fixed cost that does not change with production quantity. A $5,000 mold amortized across 5,000 units adds $1.00 per part. The same mold across 100,000 units adds $0.05 per part.

This is the single biggest driver of small batch cost. You are paying for the same engineering, CNC machining, and mold trial as a high-volume project — but spreading that cost across far fewer parts.

Setup and Machine Time

Every production run requires machine setup: installing the mold, purging the previous material, adjusting process parameters, and running first-off samples for quality approval. Setup time (typically 2–4 hours) is the same whether you produce 500 parts or 50,000. On a small batch, setup cost per unit can be substantial.

Material Minimum Order Quantities

Plastic resin suppliers typically sell in 25 kg bags. If your order requires a specialty material or specific color, you may need to purchase an entire bag even if your small batch only uses 5 kg. For custom-colored materials, the minimum order quantity (MOQ) can be 100–500 kg from compounders.

Typical Small Batch Injection Molding Costs

The table below provides indicative cost ranges for small batch injection molding projects produced in China. Actual costs depend on part size, material, complexity, and mold design.

Batch Size Mold Cost (typical) Per-Unit Part Cost (typical) Total Project Cost (est.)
500 parts $2,000 – $5,000 $1.50 – $4.00 $2,750 – $7,000
1,000 parts $2,000 – $6,000 $0.80 – $2.50 $2,800 – $8,500
5,000 parts $3,000 – $8,000 $0.35 – $1.20 $4,750 – $14,000
10,000 parts $3,000 – $10,000 $0.25 – $0.80 $5,500 – $18,000

Note: These ranges assume standard engineering plastics (ABS, PP, PC) and moderate part complexity. Medical-grade materials, tight tolerances, or complex surfaces increase costs.

Strategies to Reduce Small Batch Injection Molding Cost

1. Use a Standard Mold Base With Interchangeable Inserts

For small batches, consider a mold base that accepts interchangeable cavity inserts. This lets you produce multiple part variations using the same mold base, sharing the base cost across multiple small-batch projects. Chinese mold makers with in-house CNC capability can machine insert sets faster and at lower cost than building entirely new molds.

2. Choose Pre-Hardened Steel (P20) Over Hardened Steel

P20 steel costs less than H13 and machines faster, reducing mold manufacturing cost by 20–30%. For small batch production (under 50,000 total shots over the mold’s life), P20 provides adequate durability. Reserve H13 for projects that will eventually scale to high volume.

3. Minimize Cavity Count

A single-cavity mold costs significantly less than a multi-cavity tool. For small batches, the per-part cost saving from multiple cavities rarely justifies the higher mold investment. A $3,500 single-cavity mold producing 5,000 parts adds $0.70 per part. A $9,000 four-cavity mold producing the same 5,000 parts adds $1.80 per part — worse economics at this volume.

4. Select Standard, Readily Available Materials

Specialty materials with long lead times or high MOQs add cost and delay. For small batches, work with your manufacturer to identify a standard-grade material that meets your requirements. Common grades like ABS, PP, and PC/ABS are always in stock at Chinese factories, eliminating material MOQ premiums.

5. Consolidate Multiple Parts Into One Production Run

If you have several small parts, running them on the same machine back-to-back on the same day reduces total setup cost. Discuss this with your manufacturer during quotation — some factories offer a “production day rate” that makes consolidating small batches more economical.

Free Design Review — Optimize Your Part for Small Batch Cost

Small batch projects are especially sensitive to mold cost. A well-designed part with uniform wall thickness, minimal undercuts, and simple geometry keeps mold cost low — making small batch production economically viable.

Small Batch vs. Alternative Manufacturing Methods

For very small quantities (under 500 units), we typically walk OEM customers through a comparison of injection molding against alternative processes:

Factor Injection Molding (Small Batch) CNC Machining 3D Printing
Mold/tooling cost $2,000 – $5,000 Minimal setup None
Per-unit cost at 500 pcs $1.50 – $4.00 $8 – $50+ $10 – $80+
Material properties Production-grade Production-grade Varies by technology
Surface finish Production-grade Good Layer lines visible
Scalability Easy to scale up Moderate Not scalable

For 500–1,000 units where material properties and surface finish matter, small batch injection molding is often the best option despite the mold investment. For prototype quantities of 1–50 units, send your 3D drawing to our engineers — they will recommend the most cost-effective manufacturing path for your stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is injection molding worth it for only 500 parts?

It depends on your part requirements. If you need production-grade material properties, consistent dimensions, and a smooth surface finish, injection molding delivers quality that CNC machining and 3D printing cannot match — even at 500 units. If your part is simple, has no cosmetic requirements, and you only need functional prototypes, CNC machining may be more economical. The break-even varies by part complexity; send your drawing for a cost comparison.

Can Chinese factories do small batch injection molding profitably?

Yes. Many Chinese injection molding factories, including Hua Zi, accept small batch projects. The key is finding a factory whose equipment and workflow accommodate low-volume runs. Factories with 45 machines across a range of tonnages can dedicate smaller machines to small batch production without disrupting high-volume lines. This is different from factories optimized exclusively for million-part contracts.

How can I get a lower mold cost for a small batch?

The three most effective approaches are: (1) simplify your part design to eliminate undercuts and complex mechanisms, (2) use P20 steel instead of hardened steel, and (3) accept a longer lead time so the factory can slot your mold into a production gap rather than expediting. Discuss these options during DFM review with your injection mold manufacturer.

What if my small batch is successful and I need to scale up?

This is the ideal scenario. If your initial small batch mold is built on a standard mold base, scaling up involves: (1) converting from single-cavity to multi-cavity inserts, or (2) building a dedicated high-volume mold using the process parameters validated during small batch production. A factory that handles both low and high volume gives you a seamless transition path without changing manufacturers.

Do you offer prototype injection molding before committing to a production mold?

While we do not offer rapid prototyping services, our plastic injection molding service can produce small validation batches (500–2,000 units) using a production-grade single-cavity mold. This gives you real production parts for testing and market validation before investing in a multi-cavity high-volume mold. Contact us to discuss the best approach for your development stage.
